Eastphalia

The Saxon land were integrated into the Frankish Empire and divided into the dominions Westphalia, Engern and Ostfalen. The ending- Westphalia is of Germanic origin and refers to the level that ( initially) was divided by the river Weser in Ostfalen and Westphalia.

After 1180 the imperial ban was imposed on Henry the Lion, the division Ostfalens followed in smaller dominions, such as the Duchy of Brunswick -Lüneburg, which was Otto the Child in 1235 awarded as an imperial fief. Other dominions Ostfalens at that time were the secular areas of the Bishops of Halberstadt and Hildesheim, the Archbishop of Magdeburg and the pin area Quedlinburg. Also, the Empire district of Goslar and Wernigerode and Blankenburg the counties were part Ostfalens. Through the estate settlement dominions were always smaller and more numerous. So also disintegrated the Duchy of Brunswick -Lüneburg. As the largest single part of it emerged the Principality of Brunswick- Wolfenbüttel. The time already weak " Ostfalen - consciousness" was completely lost.
