Ebenezer Zane

Ebenezer Zane ( born October 7, 1747 in Moorefield, † 1811) was an American pioneer, road builder and land speculator.

Life

Zane was born in what is now Moorefield, West Virginia is one of six children. He was the founding father of a settlement on the Ohio River at Wheeling, which was known as Fort Henry. Ebenezer Zane married Elizabeth McColloch (1748 - 1814) and had with her 10 children. Some of them inscribed with the first constitution of Ohio. He died in 1811 from jaundice. His great-grandson was the famous Western writer Zane Grey.

Honors

  • The city of Zanesville was named in his honor.
  • From 1796 Zane received funds from the Congress of the United States to a road through the North West area to build. He received this land. This route became known as Zane 's Trace. Completed later she crossed the Ohio State to Wheeling in Virginia and Maysville in Kentucky.
