Eberhard, Duke of Bavaria

Eberhard of Bavaria (c. 912; ? † 940 ()) was the eldest son of Duke Arnulf of Bavaria and his wife Judith of Friuli. He succeeded his father in 937 as Duke of Bavaria, but was deposed and exiled by King Otto I already 938.

Already 933/934 should get the Lombard crown in one ( though unsuccessful ) campaign in Italy, which had been offered to him by the maternal northern Italian nobility due to his lineage Unruochinger Eberhard. 935 designated his father Arnulf with the consent and homage of the Bavarian nobility as his successor. At about the same time Eberhard likely to have married his wife Liutgard.

Duke Eberhard and Otto I.

After Arnulf's death was 937 Eberhard Duke of Bavaria, but quickly fell into conflict with King Otto I, who refused to accept the contractually guaranteed special position in the kingdom of Bavaria Association. Otto broke the treaty of 921, which was closed between Duke Arnulf of Bavaria and Henry I.. In two campaigns in spring and autumn 938 deposed Otto Eberhard and banished him. Instead of his uncle Eberhard Berthold Otto was appointed Duke of Bavaria, after he had waived important privileges such as the right to appoint the bishop and the administration of the kingdom of Good in Bavaria. Eberhard's brother Arnulf ( II ), who had supported his brother, was pardoned by Otto and inserted into the newly created Office of the Count Palatine of Bavaria.

The fate Eberhard's nothing definite has been handed down. His son was Wigfried 959 Bishop of Verdun, his daughter married first weighting Castle Count Pilgrim of the family of Pilgrimiden, after his death, the Bavarian Palatinate Count Hartwig I..

Neither is Eberhard's date of death handed down yet known to be a place of exile. Various theories assume they have either died around 940 or fled to Hungary and from there 953 mediated a compound of the rebel forces of Otto Prince with the Hungarians.
