Eberswalde Hauptbahnhof is the historically most important and the only remaining railway station in the city of Eberswalde. It was opened in the summer of 1842, far outside of the then city limits. The city fathers of Eberswalde not want the modern railway in their city, which is why the station was about three kilometers west of the city built in a wooded area, where is the Westend district today.

History

Eberswalde was one of the first cities in Germany, which received a railway. Seven years after the first German railway line Nuremberg -Fürth, the city was connected to the then unusual and very modern railway network. It soon became clear that the expansion of the railway line for supply of the city was important. In the following years the city grew especially towards the west, ie to the station, its buildings were designed by Friedrich Neuhaus. Already in 1867 a wooden bridge was built over the tracks.

On May 1, 1844 the following buildings and facilities were present on the Eberswalde station:

  • Reception building including four official residences
  • A two constant roundhouse
  • Water station building with Koksgelass ( Coal bunkers )
  • Cars and goods shed in truss design
  • Coke and salt shed
  • Stable building with apartments
  • A restoration Bude (Restaurant )

Since 1866, originated as a railway line to Wriezen - 1876/77 to Frankfurt ( Oder) extended - Eberswalde is a railway junction. Between 1866 and 1867 the station building has been expanded. 1873 engine shed was built with eight stalls and the old double-track demolished. On January 7, 1878 in the vicinity of the station opened the repair shop of Berlin - Stettin Railway (present-day DB maintenance work ) its gates. 1898 was a route toward Joachimsthal and Templin, who split in the neighboring station Britz of the Szczecin railway.

Between 1906 and 1910 the station was the first time comprehensively redesigned. He received several platforms, a pedestrian tunnel, a large reception hall and several restaurants. In the following decades Eberswalde was a popular destination for Berliners, especially the train station restaurants were very crowded.

Because of the building of the city district Westend a railway bridge was built in 1910 as a replacement of a wooden bridge dating from 1904. After a trolley bus was operated in 1901 for a few months, ran from 1910 to 1940, an electric tram from the marketplace Eberswalde to the station forecourt. Since 1940, consists in Eberswalde the oldest still existing Obussystem Germany.

Until about 2004, Eberswalde Hauptbahnhof remained largely in the state of 1910, improvements were hardly takes place. The station facilities were located in a largely poor condition, why then a complete reconstruction was performed, in which the tunnel to the north and the platforms were moved to the south. The railway bridge Eberswalde was demolished and replaced by a new building. Stairs from the platforms to the railway bridge was also built not this time. From the former railway station, only the main building has been preserved. An old mechanical destination indicators ( " Marionette "), which is a listed building, was re-erected on the platform.
