Part of the population is descended from evacuated marshalers. Due to the explosion of 15 megaton bomb " Bravo " in the Bikini Atoll on March 1, 1954, the neighboring Rongelap Atoll was contaminated by radioactive fallout, so that many residents suffering from radiation sickness and newborns often had severe deformities.
