Ebles II of Roucy

Ebles II († May 1103 ) was Count of Roucy and Lord of Ramerupt 1063-1103.

He was a son Hilduins IV, Count of Montdidier, Lord of Ramerupt and his wife Countess Adelaide of Roucy, and inherited when his father died the county Roucy, as well as the rule Ramerupt.

Life

Ebles led around the year 1073 a large army, which was worthy of a king, according to Suger of Saint -Denis, to Spain to fight against the Moors. This hostile array has been promoted by Pope Alexander II and the Abbot Hugh of Cluny since the Aragonese King Sancho Ramírez, after the reconquest of Barbastro by the Moors in 1065, was politically and religiously brought closer to Rome. All conquests Ebles should thereby be made in favor of St. Peters, he also got most absolution for this campaign assured why this military engagement can be seen as an anticipation to the Crusades. Ebles sister, Felicia, had been already married to the King of Aragon since about 1070, which he shared with his nephew Rotrou III. supported by Perche against his cousin Sancho IV of Navarre, instead of moving against the Moors.

Then Ebles moved to southern Italy where he supported the Norman ruler Robert Guiscard in its fight against the Byzantine Empire under Alexios I Komnenos. Around the year 1082 he married Guiscard 's daughter Sibylle.

Back in France led Ebles Guiscard and his son several feuds with their neighbors, especially against the archbishops of Reims their land devastated. Only after a military intervention of Crown Prince Ludwig (VI ) 1102 submitted to Ebles and ended his raids.
