Eboli

Eboli is a town with 38,385 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in Campania ( Italy), in the province of Salerno, on the south side of the Sele Valley.

Eboli is known as an agricultural center, mainly because of its olive oil and its dairy products.

The ancient Eburum was a Lukan city, which was only mentioned by Pliny the Elder and in inscriptions, and was not far from the Campanian boundary. This was above the Via Popilia, where there is now a railway line.

To date, there are scattered remnants of the old boundary walls.

The vestry of St. Francis of Assisi contains two paintings from the 14th century, one of which Roberto da Oderisio of Naples created.

A local saying is: Cristo si è fermato a Eboli ( Christ Stopped at Eboli ). This used the Italian author Carlo Levi as the title of his novel, which deals with poverty in southern Italy in the early 20th century.

Ana de Mendoza y de la Cerda, a maid of honor to the Queen of Spain, and character in Friedrich Schiller's play Don Carlos wore the title of Princess Eboli.
