Geographical Location

Ebrach between Bamberg and Würzburg in the east to the west. It is located in the Steigerwald in the Middle Ebrach. In Ebrach is the former Cistercian monastery Ebrach.

History

The name probably comes not from Eber, but perhaps by an ancient tribe vorgermanischen ebr (water ), cognate with Basque ibar ( valley).

Ebrach monastery was founded in 1127 as one of the first rechtsrheinischen Cistercian monasteries by the Frankish noble outdoor Berno and Richwin of Eberau. 1127 relocated twelve monks from the monastery mother Mori Moon. 1200 Abbot Hermann I began the construction of the abbey church, which was completed in 1285. It is 88 meters long and is considered one of the most beautiful monuments of early Gothic architecture. A recently renovated magnificent neo-classical interiors, over 50 windows, 26 altars and on the west portal of a rosette of twelve feet in diameter on the model of Notre Dame in Paris adorn the building. The windows were repainted in 1887. The monastery was dissolved in 1803 in the wake of secularization, the place came through the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss to Bavaria. Ebrach monastery was officially awarded the Imperial immediacy until its repeal. Before 1803 this was always denied having success through the Bishopric of Würzburg. The church has since Catholic Parish of the Assumption. Since 1851, the monastery buildings serve as a prison (now Penitentiary reverb).

Incorporations

On April 1, 1971, the former municipality Neudorf was incorporated in Ebrach. On 1 January 1972 was followed by book, Großbirkach and Großgressingen.

  • Organs of the parish church: In addition to the large main organ ( concert organ ) on the west gallery with a modern factory in a baroque housing that was built by the Würzburg organ builder Johann Philipp seuffert in 1743, houses the former abbey church in the monks' choir two original baroque choir organs from the workshop of Frankfurt organ builder Johann Christian Köhler. Economy, agriculture and forestry

Due to the location in the Steigerwald forest wood is an important economic factor.
