ECEF

The geocentric coordinate system is a three-dimensional rectangular Cartesian coordinate system with the coordinates X, Y and Z. Its origin (0,0,0 ) is in the center of mass of the selected respectively as the reference ellipsoid earth model.

The Z axis extends along the center axis of rotation of the earth. It is defined by the International Earth Rotation Service ( IERS ) as IERS Reference Pole (IRP ) and the exact date Polbewegungen there are thus ignored. The X - axis is at the height of the equator by the prime meridian ( Greenwich). Consequently, the Y- axis, since they at right angles to the other two axes, equal to the equator toward the east.

The coordinate axes form a legal system that rotates with the Earth. The distance of a point in the coordinate system is always the same at a specific location on the earth's surface.

In the area of satellite navigation the geocentric coordinate system ECEF ( Earth - Centered, Earth - Fixed) has been defined. It is used because no specific ellipsoid must be specified here.
