Echecrates of Phlius

Echecrates (Greek Ἐχεκράτης Echecrates ) from Phlius (c. 417 BC) was a philosopher of the Pythagorean school. He was a pupil of Philolaus.

Echecrates is an interlocutor in Plato's dialogue Phaedo, where he asks Phaedo of Elis, to report on the death of Socrates. He then interrupts the report to him a particularly interesting place where the idea is mentioned, the soul could be considered as " harmony " of the body functions are considered.

Aristoxenus, who knew Echecrates personally, described him as one of the last Pythagoreans. A doubt about his Pythagoreanism was expressed 1974/1977 by Francesco Prontera, but has been found in research with no approval. He is probably identical with the Echecrates to which the historian Timaeus invoked by Tauromenion.
