Echols County, Georgia

The Echols County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. Administrative office ( County Seat) is Statesville, named after Captain James W. Staten, who opened the first store here.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme south-southeast of Georgia, bordered to the south by the northern boundary of Florida. It has an area of 1090 square kilometers, of which 43 square kilometers of water surface are bordered clockwise to the following counties: Clinch County, Lowndes County and Lanier County.

History

Echols County was formed on December 13, 1858 from parts of Clinch County and Lowndes County. It was named after Robert M. Echols, a member of the General Assembly and the Senate President. He died with the rank of brigadier-general during the Mexican-American War.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Echols County 3,754 people in 1,264 households and 936 families. The population density was 4 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 77.1 percent white, 6.9 percent African American, 1.2 percent Native American, 0.1 percent Asian, and 13.7 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.0 percent were descended from two or more races. 19.7 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 1,264 households out of which 38.1 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 58.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.8 percent were single mothers and 25.9 percent were non-families. 18.7 percent of all households and 9.1 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.97 and the average family size was 3.26 persons.

29.3 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 12.5 percent between 18 to 24, 30.8 percent between 25 and 44, 18.3 percent between 45 and 64, and 9.1 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 30 years. For every 100 females there were statistically 116.1 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 114.6 males.

The median income for a household was $ 25,851, and the median income for a family $ 27,700. Males have a median income of $ 24,650, women $ 17,297. The per capita income was $ 15,727. 28.7 percent of the population and 22.3 percent of families are below the poverty line.
