Eckbolsheim

Eckbolsheim (Alsatian Eckelse ) is a municipality with 6514 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the canton Mundolsheim in the department of Bas -Rhin in Alsace region of France.

Geography

The small town is located in the agglomeration of Strasbourg in D 45 between Wolfisheim and Strasbourg.

History

As early as the Neolithic period, around 5000-3500 BC, people lived in the area of today's town. At that time the Breusch met several times over the banks and flooded the area. A Celtic way connected with the Strasbourg Breuschtal and a Roman road Basel Cologne; they crossed the later Eckbolsheim.

In the year 235, the Germanic peoples broke into the area. They defeated the 7th Roman Legion, the settlement was destroyed.

Monastic orders were between the 11th and 13th centuries, a great influence on the Alsace. The Dominicans founded a monastery in 1224 Eckbolsheim, which they called Santa Margherita. In this temporarily moved sisters of the monastery Sylo after their monastery was burned at Schlettstadt 1263.

Place name

A former village name was Eggiboldesheim. Thus, the name of the words corner and brave (or soon ) is composed. Places whose names end with home usually Alemannic ups. In a document of Pope Innocent IV today Eckbolsheim appears as Eckboltzheim. Around the year 1517 it was named in documents Egöltzen.
