The shores of the bay are formed by water and the surf. Especially with wind from the northeast and southwest, a considerable swell can build up. With increased by 0.75 meter water level sand and gravel is removed from the cliff coast. In some places the coastline turns soft annually by 15 to 20 centimeters. In the southeast by the hills of the moraine of the last glacial period to be cut. In this way a 30 -meter-high and 3.6 km long cliff has formed before Altenhof. Meanwhile steadily removed material is deposited in part further west again and separated the Goossee of the Eckernförder bay. Parallel to the beach run some sand reefs in the water.
