Eckertal

Eckertal is a 153 inhabitants (as at 31 December 2011) scoring district of Bad Harzburg. Nearest neighbor is Stapelburg in Saxony- Anhalt. The local situation is bounded on the north and west by the glimmer of the forest and on the east by the plug. In the times of the German division Eckertal was a popular destination; on West German side there was a lookout tower, could be overlooked from which the inner German border. About four miles south of the capital is the Eckertalsperre. Also this time was a popular destination. The dam of the dam is accessible and was secured at the time when Germany was divided by a wall on the dam as a border.

History

Erected in 1936, the Wehrmacht immediately northwest of the location adjacent an Air Force ammunition depot ( Muna ). On April 10, 1945, this was completely destroyed by self- detonation. The massive blast destroyed the windows still seven kilometers from the train station of Bad Harzburg. On the 240 -acre grounds are home to more than 120 bunkers, as well as a large number of Blasts judges with a diameter of up to 60 m. Until 2012, the Lower Saxony bomb disposal team was at Eckertal in use. When the Berlin Wall was opened on 9 November 1989, it was only a matter of time before this happened also on the inner German border. On November 11, 1989 around 16:30 clock the border was opened between Eckertal and Stapelburg. Historically, this was the first new border crossing between the GDR and the FRG. Today there a memorial stone bearing the words " Unity and justice and freedom for the German fatherland " at this event.
