The Eclipse Public License (EPL ) is a free software license, and therefore granted the right to freely use, dissemination and modification of the software. It is a slightly modified version and the Ablöser the Common Public License (CPL ). The Open Source Initiative and the Free Software Foundation recognize the EPL, even though it is incompatible with the GNU General Public License ( GPL).

Unlike the GPL, however, each based on the software station does not need to be placed under the EPL. When new modules are added, they may under a different - and are sold license - possibly proprietary. However, if a module which is subject to the EPL, is changed, it must also continue to be sold under the EPL.

The difference to the Mozilla Public License is the treatment of patents under the license.

The Eclipse Public License is a slightly modified version of the Common Public License ( CPL), which is used especially for the Eclipse development environment and their plugins. To reduce the large number of open source licenses, IBM and the Eclipse Foundation have agreed in April 2009 that the EPL the CPL officially replaces. In the Open Source Initiative, the Common Public License therefore performed as replacing license. However, the use of the license is still possible.
