Ecodisc

EcoDisc is a DVD, which consists of only one layer of polycarbonate instead of the usual two bonded polycarbonate discs. By requiring only half the polycarbonate, it is also lighter and thinner. Further, in the production of only half of the available energy is needed.

In the production process of EcoDisc 52 % less carbon dioxide (CO2) is emitted as in the manufacture of a conventional DVD5. Because it is beyond of only one layer, no toxic glue is needed, so that it is completely recyclable. The capacity of a EcoDisc is the same as that of a conventional DVD5 with 4.7GB capacity.

Previous versions of the EcoDisc resulted in some problems with slot-in drives, but could be eliminated now. In 2009, led Testronic Laboratories extensive tests regarding the playability and compatibility to more than 240 different players and drives. The result of this series of tests showed a workability of approximately 100% ( the same as that of a conventional DVD5 ).

The EcoDisc was developed by the EcoDisc Technology AG, a research and development company that does not have its own production facility. EDT licensed the EcoDisc at pressing plants, the necessary upgrade kits for DVD pressing machines and presses it will be provided and the employees of the respective training DVD pressing plants. The EcoDisc Technology is registered as a European patent and three European patents, 2 international patents and 6 U.S. patents pending. Patent protection includes markets such as Russia, China, Australia, India and significant markets in Africa and South Africa.
