Ecpyrrhorrhoe rubiginalis is a small butterfly of the family Crambidae ( superfamily Pyraloidea ) within the order of the butterflies (Lepidoptera ).

Features

The wingspan of the moth is about 16 to 20 millimeters (or a forewing length of 8 to 10 mm). The ground color of the wings varies from yellowish brown to orange brown. They are dark brown in color or dusted in varying degrees. The forewings have two jagged dark brown transverse lines. Typical is a deep sinus in the outer transverse line. The front edge is also dyed dark brown. The width of the dark brown seam zone varies considerably. The hind wings have the same color as the fore wings, but have only a transverse line.

The caterpillar is light gray with a light gray back zone and a narrow, dark designed topline. The head is yellowish to light gray.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is widespread in southern Central Europe and Southern Europe. Way of life

Ecpyrrhorrhoe rubiginalis flies in two overlapping generations of May to September. The moths are nocturnal and are attracted to the light. The oligophagen caterpillars feed on healing Betony ( Stachys officinalis), Perilla ( Ballota nigra ) and the commons hollow tooth ( Galeopsis tetrahit ) and live in a cocoon on the underside of leaves of their food plants. Pupation takes place in or on the Earth.

Endangering

The species is listed in several German states on the list of endangered species or is classified as endangered. However, the distribution of the species is so far little studied, and therefore the classification in the " Red List " is not particularly reliable.

Systematics and Taxonomy

The taxon was described in 1775 by Jacob Hübner as Pyralis rubiginalis first time scientifically. The (Syn ) types were from around Vienna and Niemierow (now Ukraine ). It is the type species of the genus Ecpyrrhorrhoe Hübner, 1825.
