Ed Sanders (Boxer)

Ed Sanders ( born March 30, 1930 as Hayes Edward Sanders in Los Angeles, California, † December 12, 1954 in Boston, Massachusetts ) was an American boxer.

Amateur career

He won in 1952 in the final of the Olympic Games in Helsinki against Ingemar Johansson the gold medal. Johansson was disqualified in the fight due to inactivity by the referee.

Professional career

1954 Sanders was provided professional and fast against experienced opponents. But already his fourth fight he lost on points against Willie Wilson.

After he won the rematch, he ran against Willie James on December 11, 1954. He lost by knockout in the eleventh round and was unconscious, immediately rushed to a hospital, where he died 18 hours later in a subdural hematoma. He was 24 years old.
