Ed van den Heuvel

Edward "Ed" PJ van den Heuvel ( born November 2, 1940 in Soest ) is a Dutch astrophysicist known for observing the afterglow of gamma-ray bursts. He is a professor at the Institute Anton Pannekoek Astronomy of the University of Amsterdam.

Life

He studied mathematics, physics and astronomy at the University of Utrecht with the graduation 1968 on the rotation of stars. Except at the University of Amsterdam he was also at the University of California, Santa Barbara (1991 ), Utrecht University, the Institute for Advanced Study and the Free University of Brussels.

In addition to gamma-ray flashes, he deals with the astronomy of compact objects such as neutron stars, white dwarfs in binary systems and black holes.

In 1995 he was awarded the Spinoza Prize and the Descartes Prize 2002. He holds honorary doctorates from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. He is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences (1982) and honorary member of the Indian Academy of Sciences. He is a Knight of the Order of the Netherlands Lion. He is a member of the Royal Astronomical Society and an honorary member of the University Center for Astronomy and Astrophysics ( IUCAA ) in Pune.
