Eddie Costa

James Edwin " Eddie" Costa ( born August 14, 1930 in Atlas, Pennsylvania, † July 28, 1962 in New York City, New York ) was an American pianist and vibraphonist of modern jazz.

Life and work

Eddie Costa took piano lessons, as vibraphonist but self-taught. He played the beginning of the 1950s with Tal Farlow, Kai Winding, Don Elliott, had his own trio and worked with Woody Herman 1958 until 1959. Costa took plates with Bobby Jaspar, Mundell Lowe, Teo Macero, Herbie Mann, Hal McKusick, Oscar Pettiford, Joe Puma, Sal Salvador, Chuck Wayne and four albums under his own name. He worked on several big-band projects by Gunther Schuller, Ernie Wilkins, Michel Legrand, Harry Sweets Edison and Buck Clayton.

Will be remembered his association with Bill Evans in the album Guys And Dolls Like Vibes in 1958 and his role in the recordings of arranger Johnny Carisi on the Gil Evans album Into the Hot 1961.

Eddie Costa belongs to the group of young jazz musicians such as Clifford Brown and Scott LaFaro came at the beginning of a promising career in an accident to death and became legends.
