Eddy Achterberg

Eddy Achterberg ( born February 21, 1947 in Utrecht ) is a former Dutch football player and coach.

Career

Even with 15 years Achterberg turned pro when he signed a contract with DOS. In 1967 he went to FC Twente Enschede and completed until 1976 for the Enschede 246 games in the Eredivisie. Here, the midfielder scored 26 goals. 27 times ( 3 goals ), he played with Twente in UEFA club competitions, including the 1972/73 season and 1973/74 UEFA Cup, as the team only lost in the semifinals and the finals in each case against Borussia Mönchengladbach. After a broken leg in 1974, he came back, but never found its old strength. In 1977 he moved to FC Groningen, where he ended his career in 1978.

After the end of his active career, he was a representative of a German sports goods manufacturer and innkeeper. From 1988 he worked as a youth coach and later as an assistant coach at Twente Enschede. He moved in 1993 to Roda JC Kerkrade, where he was assistant coach Huub Stevens. After Stevens was changed to FC Schalke 04, Achterberg took over briefly the role of head coach, before he followed Stevens for the Bundesliga club. With Schalke he won the 1997 UEFA Cup. In 2000 he again went to Twente Enschede, where he won the KNVB Beker - as an assistant coach Fred Rutten's. After a spell as coach of the second team of Twente followed from 2003 to 2005 its second commitment in Gelsenkirchen. From 15 September (dismissal of Jupp Heynckes ) until 28 September 2004 ( obligation of Ralf Rangnick ), he served briefly as interim coach of FC Schalke 04 from 2005 to 2009 was Achterberg Scout at the Bundesliga. For the 2009/10 season he was the Austrian first division club FC Red Bull Salzburg again assistant coach Huub Stevens.

Others

In Enschede eight mountain nickname De Kay was ( " the ( billiard ) Queue "). However, the name went back to " het keutje ," as he was called in Utrecht.
