Eden (Lem novel)

Eden is a 1959 report published by Stanisław Lem sci-fi novel, subtitled " novel of an alien civilization."

Action

An alien space ship crashes on the unexplored planet Eden. The six -man crew - consisting of one coordinator, engineer, physicist, chemist, and cybernetician doctor - trying to repair their spaceship and undertakes reconnaissance trips into one of Lem described in detail strange world. So they visit, for example, a fully automated factory in which the production cycle of the workpieces has shorted.

The intelligent inhabitants of the planet are baptized by the astronauts because of its shape " Doppelts ". A delicate upper body riding on a strong lower body into which he can retreat (about the kind of kangaroo bag ). The Doppelts have a highly developed technical civilization: Disc-shaped land vehicles, electric font and an enigmatic " mechanochemistry ". The astronauts will be discovered and incorporated by a crystal wall, but they cut through their nuclear launchers, in order to extract material for the spaceship repair.

Towards the end of their stay, there is a first "contact " with a double - scientist who runs tragically in several ways: firstly, the double through the passage of a radioactively contaminated hole in the wall is doomed, on the other hand experienced astronauts fragmentarily of a pernicious dictatorship, their very existence denied and the population undergoes genetic manipulations. An intervention is hopeless - and so they fly after successful repair of the rocket again.

Interpretation

The crew constructed gradually from their observations a picture of the situation on Eden in full awareness of their hopelessly anthropocentric viewpoint which prevents a real understanding inevitably. It's Lem here to the representation of the emotional and intellectual response to the "unknown " as a central theme of the genre of science fiction. This is also evident in the permanent discussions of scientists, each representing a corresponding function of their approach.

The second theme is also central to the genre: the critical representation of earthly conditions in the " alien " worlds. Lem succeed here the nightmarish vision of an advanced totalitarian system, where technical production processes have become independent and even extend to the biological level. This has the novel addition of hidden criticism of communist dictatorship a startling actuality and is still one of the most important works of European science fiction.
