Edenderry

Edenderry ( Irish: Doire Eadán ) is a town in County Offaly in the east-central Republic of Ireland.

The place

Edenderry is situated in the extreme east of Offaly, near the counties Kildare and Meath, at a branch of the Grand Canal, which cuts the city immediately south. In the 16th century bore the name Cool Edenderry Town, for a family Cooley or Cowley, who had built a castle here. The Irish name as meaning " the hill -brow of the oak wood" in English.

Demographics and traffic connections

At the 2006 Census lived in Edenderry 5403 people, with the population between 1996 and 2006 - increased by more than 50 % - mainly due to the relative proximity to Dublin. From Dublin Edenderry is 64 km away and connected to the capital by a regional road to the N4 (Dublin - Sligo). On the rail transport in Ireland Edenderry is no longer connected, but connects the Bus Éireann place via Clane with the Busáras in Dublin.
