Edgard Colle

Edgard Colle ( born May 18, 1897 in Ghent, † April 20, 1932 Ghent) was a Belgian chess master.

Colle was a professional player and decreased in the period 1922-1931 to over 50 chess tournaments. Six times he won the Belgian national championship: 1922, 1924, 1925, 1927, 1928 and 1929.

In the Amateur World Championships in Paris in 1924, he finished in third place, ahead of Max Euwe.

In a competition in Antwerp in 1925, he won against George Koltanowski, the second best player of Belgium was at this time, 4-0 with 3 draws.

His greatest successes in international tournaments were first places in Merano in 1926 (before players like Dawid Przepiórka, Rudolf Spielmann and Tartakower Savielly ) as well as in Scarborough in 1930, where he Géza Maroczy, Akiba Rubinstein and Mir Sultan Khan behind. His last tournament was Rotterdam in 1931, where he took second place.

Colle life was very sickly and could be chess Royal Talent therefore not fully realized. However, he never made responsible for less good results of his health. Because of his friendly and humble nature, he was highly appreciated in the chess scene. After his death from a stomach ulcer he devoted both Max Euwe and Hans Kmoch moving obituaries.

According to him, an opening system was named, the Colle System.
