The Edificio Copan ( Copan Building) is a 140 meter tall residential building with 32 floors in the center of São Paulo, Avenida Ipiranga 200 Construction of the building took place in 1957, after which it was finally completed after several interruptions in 1966. The building is one of the largest in the country and has the largest area ( 116 153 square meters) of all residential buildings worldwide.

The complex was not named after the ancient Mayan city of Copan in Honduras; the name is an acronym of its original developer, Companhia Pan - Americana de Hotéis e Turismo ( Panamerican Company for Hotels and Tourism ). The designs of the building date from Oscar Niemeyer's office in São Paulo. He himself was responsible for the famous sinuous facade design (according to his own statement, in accordance with the then road ), but later gave the project due to discrepancies from. Another architect was involved Carlos Lemos. In its final version, the building has 1160 units of varying sizes (between 26 and 350 square meters ) and 5,000 residents. The living area and number of apartments resulted entries in the Guinness Book of World Records. The Copan consists of six separate blocks, which built together, but are not interconnected. Due to the large number of residents of the complex received its own ZIP code. The current homeownership community employs more than 100 employees to handle any issues in the house. Downstairs there are currently around 70 shops and other facilities, including ( since the 90s ) a church, a travel agency and four restaurants.
