Edinburgh Festival Fringe

The Edinburgh Festival Fringe ( also Edinburgh Fringe, or just The Fringe ) is a cultural festival that takes place annually in August in Edinburgh.

The Fringe was founded in 1947, when eight theater groups the large number of visitors expected this year also the inaugural Edinburgh Festival wanted to use by organizing their own " unofficial" performances. Since then, the Fringe has outstripped the official festival, has its own organization and its own staff and sold more than one million cards per year.

The Fringe is almost exclusively dedicated to the performing arts, particularly theater and comedy; the range from Shakespeare to experimental works. Some Fringe venues are regular theater and regularly sell hundreds of tickets to a performance, while others are converted churches or even the living room and pull -digit audience. Initially there was animosity between Fringe and official festival, now these have disappeared.

The Edinburgh Fringe has a worldwide circle of festivals inspired in Canadian, American, Australian and European cities. Fringe festivals are characterized by their selection without a jury as well as the variety and breadth of content of the events.

The prestigious Perrier Comedy Awards will be presented at the Festival Fringe.
