Edme-François Jomard

Edmé François Jomard (born 22 December 1777 Versailles; † September 23, 1862 in Paris) was a French geographer and Egyptologist.

Jomard took as an engineer geographer part in the expedition to Egypt, then participated in 1803-14 in the drafting of the Description de l' Égypte (Vol. 1-6), 1815 Member of the Education Committee and in 1818 a member of the Academy of Inscriptions.

Since 1828 curator of maps and plans at the Royal Library at Paris, he was appointed Chief Librarian in 1839 and held this position under Napoleon III.

In terms of African Studies Jomard was regarded as authority. His main works are:

  • Notices sur les lignes numériques of égyptiens anciens (Paris 1816-19 );
  • Parallèle entre les antiquités de l' Inde et de l' Égypte (Paris 1819);
  • Sur les rapports avec l' Égypte de l' Éthiopie (Paris 1822);
  • Recueil d' observations sur l' Égypte et de mémoires ancienne et moderne ( Paris. 1830, 4 vols ) and others

He was also the Monument de la géographie ( 1842-62, 8 Tle ), a collection of old, important for the history of geography cards out and edited Frédéric Cailliauds Voyage à l'oasis de Thebes (Paris 1820), and Bernardino Drovettis Voyage à l'oasis de Syouah (Paris 1823).

The Paris Geographical Society named one of its annual prices after him in his honor. In addition, he was taken on January 24, 1861 in the Prussian Order Pour le Mérite for Arts and Science as a foreign member.
