Edmond James de Rothschild

Baron Edmond James de Rothschild ( born August 19, 1845 in Boulogne- Billancourt in the department of Hauts -de -Seine, † November 2, 1934 ) was a French philanthropist, patron and collector.

Edmond Rothschild was the youngest son of Baron James de Rothschild, the patriarch of the Paris branch of the Rothschilds. He never took an active part in the development of the Bank of the family. In the Franco-German War of 1870/71 he served in the National Guard.

In 1873 he acquired the Château Clarke.

Commitment to Zionism

In 1882 he began to acquire land in Palestine, promoted the establishment of Zichron Yaakov and Rishon LeZion and became an active supporter of Zionism. In 1889 he handed over 25,000 hectares of Palestinian agricultural land, including the settlements situated thereon at the Jewish Colonization Association. Furthermore, it allowed Russian Jews in the 1880s to settle because there pogroms taking place in Palestine, where he took to wine regions, but failed in an attempt to settle there a perfume industry.

Rothschild founded 1924, the Palestine Jewish Colonization Association, which acquired more than 500 square kilometers in Israel, and took a total of 1887-1925 five trips to Palestine in order to pursue the development of its " colonies " and the pioneer settlement of Rishon LeZion.

It is estimated that he spent more than $ 50 million for these activities. His eldest son James Armand and his wife Dorothy de Rothschild engaged at his side for Zionism.

Edmond de Rothschild and his wife Adelheid from the German branch of the family were initially buried in the Paris cemetery Père Lachaise, but received in 1954 its final grave at a state funeral near the town of Zichron Yaakov on the hill Ramat HaNadiv ( " hill of the benefactor " ).
