Edmonton Mercurys

The Edmonton Mercurys were an amateur hockey team from Edmonton in the Canadian province of Alberta. The team represented the Canadian national ice hockey team at the Ice Hockey World Championships in 1950 and 1952 as well as at the Olympic Winter Games 1952 in Oslo.

The Mercury existed in the 1940s and 1950s and were named by a car dealer in Edmonton, who sponsored the team and its best-selling model of the Ford Mercury was. The team was founded in 2002 with induction into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame: Honored ( German Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame ).

Up to and including 1963 Canadian amateur clubs were sent as a Canadian national to international tournaments. 1950 represented the Mercury Canada than Western Canada Intermediate Champions at the World Championships and won this title fights. Seven Canadian teams in the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association fought for participation as Canadian National Team at the Olympic Winter Games 1952 - the Edmonton Mercurys, Winnipeg Buffalo, St. Francis Xavier University, Trail Smoke Eaters, Noranda Copper Kings, Cornwall Falcons and the Smith Falls Rideau. Originally an elimination tournament was planned in these teams, but due to the size of Canada and the associated travel costs, the Mercury were quickly selected as a participant because they are already successfully represented Canada at the World Cup 1950.

The Olympic victory of Mercury was the fifth of Canada, at six Winter Olympics and the last for the following 50 years. Only at the Olympic Winter Games 2002, a Canadian national hockey team won a gold medal again. As to 1968 Olympic Hockey Tournament were the same as ice hockey world championship, the Mercury's ice hockey world championship 1952 were thus.
