Edmund Hlawka

Edmund Hlawka ( born November 5, 1916 in Bruck an der Mur, † February 19, 2009 in Vienna ) was an Austrian mathematician.

Life

Hlawka studied from 1934 to 1938 at the University of Vienna with Hans Thirring, Wilhelm Wirtinger, Philipp Furtwängler, Kurt Gödel and Nikolaus Hofreiter. In 1938 he received his doctorate in Hofreiter to the doctor of philosophy with the topic Using the approximations of two complex non-homogeneous linear forms. He habilitated with the proof of the theorem of Minkowski Hlawka. In 1944 he married Rosa Reiterer. In 1948 he was appointed professor at the Institute of Mathematics at the University of Vienna. 1964 Austrian Medal for Science and the Arts awarded him. In 1981 he moved to the Institute of Analysis, Technical Mathematics and Actuarial Mathematics at the Technical University of Vienna, where he worked until his retirement in 1987.

His research interests include, among other things, the geometry of numbers, Discrete geometry, the theory of uniform distribution.

Edmund Hlawka is considered the most influential Austrian mathematician of the second half of the 20th century. He is many mathematicians, scientists and engineers in Austria known for his many years of teaching. More than 40 mathematicians have a PhD with him his best-known graduate students include the Austrian computer scientist Hermann Maurer and Walter dumplings and the Austrian mathematician Harald Niederreiter, Walter Philipp, Wolfgang M. Schmidt and Rudolf Taschner.

A rare honor was bestowed to him by naming an asteroid: the International Astronomical Union ( IAU) baptized the minor planet 10763 in the name of " Hlawka ".

He was buried at the cemetery in Vienna Neustift (Group 20, Row 5, grave # 3 ).
