Edmund Kean

Edmund Kean (* November 4, 1787 in London, † May 15 1833 in Richmond ) was an English actor.

Life

Kean was the illegitimate son of Aaron Kean and the actress Anne Carey. He received his first art lessons from his mother and was soon able to debut in some children's roles.

To make money and because of the adventure itself Kean hired as a cabin boy on a trip to Madeira. In his hometown returned, he went back to the theater. By the end of 1813, he went with some theater companies touring the provincial English theater. But not until he beginning in 1814 an engagement at Drury Lane Theatre, he succeeded his artistic breakthrough.

On July 17, 1808 Kean married his colleague in London, the actress Mary Chambers. With her he had a son, John Kean (1811-1868), who also became an actor later.

A first tour to Paris in 1818 brought him sensational success and in consequence Kean were several guest appearances in Scotland and Ireland. Between 1820 and 1821 he was to be admired in all the major theaters of the United States, but with a second tour in 1825/26 by the United States, he was the great success unable to repeat his first tour. As Kean in 1828 for a second time has performed in Paris, he had the same success as the first time.

His last performance was Kean as " Othello " on 15 March 1833. During the piece he burst on the stage unconscious together. Of these episodes, he never recovered and died on 15 May 1833. ( Meyers Lexicon speaks of " messy way of life ").

Reception

Pathos, strength and the ability to excite terror, Kean possessed in the highest degree; only was his presentation often torn off and raised frequently rather than the entire character only the most glaring points of the same show. Alexandre Dumas has treated Kean's fortunes dramatically.
