Edmund Marriner Gill

Edmund Marriner Gill ( * November 29, 1820 in London, † July 12, 1896 in Carshalton, Surrey ) was an English landscape painter with a strong preference for river landscapes with waterfalls.

Life

After Gill was with his father, who was also a painter, moved to Ludlow in Shropshire, he discovered, inspired by the picturesque surroundings of the place, the landscape painting itself. Later he went to London and studied at the Royal Academy of Arts.

Beginning in 1842, Gill was present with his works at exhibitions of the Royal Academy. His numerous watercolors and oil paintings usually depict scenes from the English, Welsh and Scottish mountain regions, where he developed a special fondness for river views with waterfalls. Artistically he was influenced by David Cox, with whom he had met in 1841 in Birmingham.
