Edmund of Durham

Eadmund of Durham ( also Edmund, † 1041 ) was from 1021 to 1041 Bishop of Durham.

Life

Eadmund came from a distinguished family. After Bishop Aldhun had died in 1018, the office remained vacant for three years. The priest was Eadmund 1021 determined by a voice from the grave of St. Cuthbert Bishop and King Canute the Great actuated choice. After Eadmund monk had become, he was ordained by Archbishop Wulfstan II of York in Winchester bishop. On the way back to Durham, the experienced monk Æthelric joined him from the monastery of Peterborough as a consultant.

King Canute the Great was also later in contact with Eadmund, and presented the monastery with extensive lands.

The Scottish King Duncan I besieged Durham in 1040, but was defeated and lost almost all his army.

Eadmund died in 1041 when he visited King Hardeknut in Gloucester at the royal court. His body was brought to Durham and buried honorably.

It is sometimes also referred to as a 1042 or 1048 year of death.
