Life

Vesentini obtained his degree ( Laurea ) in 1950 at the University of Milan and received his PhD in 1956 in Rome in geometry. In 1957/58 he was a lecturer at Northwestern University and 1958/59 at the Institute for Advanced Study. In 1959 he became professor of geometry at the University of Pisa and from 1967 professor at the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa. 1968-1970 he was the deputy director and the director from 1978 to 1987. After retirement in 1996 he was a professor at the Polytechnic of Turin. He has been a visiting scholar at Harvard University (1963 /64), at the IHES (1961, 1967), at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (1965 ), at the University of Cairo, Istanbul University, the University of Maryland (1971, 1980) and at the Research Institute for Mathematics in Zurich (1968).

Vesentini dealt with complex analysis ( several complex variables), differential geometry and functional analysis.

1977 to 1985 he was president of the Istituto Nazionale di Alta Matematica Francesco Severi. 1966 to 1974 he was on the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union.

1987 to 1992 he was Italian senator.

He is a corresponding full and since 1988 a member of the Accademia dei Lincei, which he was president in 1997 since 1979. In 1979 he became a corresponding member of the Istituto Lombardo and 1995 corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences in Turin. In 1956 he received the Pomini Prize, 1959 Bonavera Prize, the 1962 Premio Caccioppoli, 1975, the Gold Medal of the Società Italiana delle Scienze, 1981 Feltrinelli Prize and Grand Officer of the Order " Al Merito della Repubblica ". He holds honorary doctorates from the University of Tübingen. In 1966 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Moscow (Topic: Rigidity of quotients of bounded symmetric domains).
