Edradour is the smallest whiskey distillery Scottish. It is located in a small valley, hidden by surrounding mountains, east of the town of Pitlochry. From the staff just twelve casks of 600 gallons ( about 2,720 liters ) are produced distillate per week, which results in approximately 90,000 liters or approximately 250,000 bottles per year - large distilleries produce this amount in a week. Every year, however, come up to 100,000 visitors to this distillery, so in addition almost 20 guide must be employed. The distillery buildings are sorted in the Scottish lists of monuments in the B category.

Origin of the name

The origin of the name Edradour is not clear, there are two possible phrases from the Gaelic language in question. For one, " Edred Dhobhar " ( The river of [ King] Edred ), on the other hand " Eadar DHA Dhobhar " ( between two rivers ). The latter is also found as a place name in Gaelic maps and is listed on the guides as the origin.

History

The distillery was probably founded as early as 1825 by a cooperative of farmers to cover their own needs. The official founding and its first documentary mention took place in 1837. 1841 the cooperative was then renamed John McGlashan & Co., and began production for the market. 1933, William Whiteley & Co., a subsidiary of the American group JG Turney & Sons distillery, Edradour so that the main constituent of the King Ransome was. Campbell Distillers Ltd, which belongs to the spirits group Pernod Ricard, took over the company in 1982. The first bottling as a single malt was made in 1986. On 22 July 2002 the distillery to the independent Scottish bottler Signatory was resold.

Production

The water belonging to the Highlands / Southern Highlands distillery comes from a source at Mhoulin Moor. The distillery has a mash tun ( mash do ) (1.25 t ), two fermentation tanks (wash backs) ( 5,000 l) of Douglas fir wood, a wash still ( 4,218 l ) and a spirit still ( 2,179 l).

Products / flavors

The taste of the whiskey is highly dependent on the wood species of the stock barrels used in each case ( Marsala, Madeira, port wine, Chardonnay, Sauternes, Bordeaux and Burgundy ). The whiskey is generally very strong, but also has a sweet note reminiscent of caramel candy.

While virtually the standard bottling is available in Germany, there are in the store of the distillery in addition a variety of so-called Cask bottlings to buy.

Edradour also offers a private Cream Liqueur.

Visits

Edradour has a visitor center and can no longer be visited free of charge since January 2010. However, visitors are allowed to keep their Glencairn whiskey glass of the tasting.

Curiosities

If the two stills were only slightly smaller, the distillery would be considered illegal distillery, since they would then classified by the tax authorities as transportable.
