Eduard August von Regel

Eduard von rule (Russian Эдуард Людвигович Регель, born August 13, 1815 in Gotha, .. † 15 Apriljul / April 27 1892greg in Saint Petersburg ) was a German botanist and gardener. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " rule".

Life

Usually learned the nursery in the royal orangery to Gotha, and then went as a volunteer at the Botanical Garden of Göttingen. The following stations were Bonn and Berlin before finally rule in 1842 the head gardener of the Botanical Gardens in Zurich. In Zurich rule received his doctorate and his habilitation.

In 1855 he moved to St. Petersburg, where he initially worked as a research director, and later as chief botanist and from 1875 until his death in 1892 as Director of the Imperial Botanic Garden. He was a member of the Imperial Free Economic Society to Saint Petersburg.

Rule has made great contributions to the Russian fruit growing, which he studied in detail and the perfection he added. So he created in 1863 a Pomological Garden ( with apple trees ) at its own expense, the nursery and Acclimatisation were very useful.

He founded in 1852 the magazine " Garden Flora", in which he described many new species. Back to Volume 16 # 2 of begun by Augustin- de Candolle Pyrame and by his son Alphonse Louis Pierre de Candolle Pyrame further published work Prodromus systematis naturalis regni vegetabilis he contributed a paper on the family of " Betulaceae ".

According to him, the plant genus Regelia are shower of the myrtle family ( Myrtaceae ), the Bromeliad Neoregelia LBSm. as well as a magazine " Regelia " named.

The Bavarian Academy of Sciences appointed him in 1874 as a corresponding member and in 1888 foreign members.

He was the father of Johann Albert rule. Fritz rule was his nephew.
