Eduard Clam-Gallas

Eduard Count Clam -Gallas ( born March 14, 1805 in Prague, † March 17 1891 in Vienna) was an Austrian officer, most recently General of Cavalry.

Biography

He was the son of the famous through artistry and charity Christian Christoph Count Clam -Gallas ( 1771-1838 ). He joined in 1823 the Austrian army, in 1831 the first captain in the regiment of cuirassiers No. 1, 1835 Major, Colonel 1840, 1846 Major General and Brigade Commander in Prague.

In 1848 he returned to Italy, where he led a brigade under Radetzky and distinguished himself at Santa Lucia, Vicenza and Custozza. He was awarded the Maria Theresa Medal and promoted to Lieutenant-General. In 1849 he became commander of the Transylvanian army corps and was successful against Józef Bem. In 1850 he was given command of the I. Czech Army Corps, which he commanded in 1859 at the battles of Magenta and Solferino in Sardinian War in Italy. In these battles his army corps left the battlefield as the first, but had no personal consequences. Promoted to general of cavalry. In 1861 he became a member of the manor house, the upper house of the Austrian Imperial Council and 1865 High Steward of the emperor.

1866 in the German war, he suffered a devastating defeat at the Battle of Gitschin, was brought before a court-martial, but acquitted on the basis of his social position. He spent his retirement years on his estates Friedland and Reichenberg in Bohemia.

In 1850 he was married to Matilda ( 1828-1899 ), the daughter and heiress of Joseph Franz Fürst von Dietrich Stein ( 1798-1858 ), his son Franz Count Clam -Gallas.
