Eduard Hildebrandt

Eduard Hildebrandt ( born September 9, 1817 in Gdansk, † October 25, 1868 in Berlin) was a German painter.

Life

Hildebrandt received his first art lessons from his father. With twenty years Hildebrandt moved to Berlin in 1837 and came under different painters in studios. Already in the following year undertook a study tour to Hildebrandt island of Rügen and discovered for himself in the landscape of the German Baltic coast as a subject. After his return, he got a job in the studio of the marine painter Wilhelm Krause. 1839 Hildebrandt undertook a study tour of England and Scotland, with a focus in turn formed the coast.

On the recommendation of Wilhelm Krause Hildebrandt was able to go to Paris in 1841 and pupil of the painter Eugène Isabey there. Early as 1843, he was allowed to participate with a small genre painting in the exhibition of the Paris Salon; It was awarded a gold medal. Later that year, Hildebrandt returned to Berlin. On the recommendation of Alexander von Humboldt, the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV, Hildebrandt supported to a considerable sum, so this could make 1844 an extended trip to Brazil and North America.

This two year study trip was artistically very crucial to Hildebrandt. In addition to his seascapes, which he painted less and less, he focused from now on landscape paintings, which he created in extraordinary light and shadow effects. After returning from this trip originated on the basis of sketches, drawings and watercolors, many oil paintings, of which bought most of the royal court.

Shortly afterwards, Hildebrandt became the Royal. Preuss. Appointed court painter. As such, he started in the late summer of 1848 to a journey that took him from London to Funchal ( Madeira). From there he sailed along the west coast of Africa, Las Palmas de Gran Canaria visited (Canary Islands) and returned to Spain and Portugal in the fall of 1849 returned to Berlin. The yield of the trip consisted of over 200 watercolors, which bought almost all of the Prussian king.

On the occasion of the great Berlin Art Exhibition of 1850 showed the two images Hildebrandt "A Glimpse into the sea " and " evening in Madeira ", with which he again won a gold medal.

Hildebrandt's fourth journey took him through Italy in 1851, Egypt and Syria to Palestine. About Turkey and Greece, he returned to Berlin. The yield was again hundreds of watercolors and drawings, which were also bought up almost entirely by the Prussian king. Other buyers were Tsar Nicholas I of Russia, whose son Alexander II, the Duke of Ratibor, Clovis Hohenlohe and Princess zu Sayn- ​​Wittgenstein.

His fifth voyage, in turn funded by the Prussian court, Hildebrandt led by the mountain ranges of Switzerland, through Austria and northern Italy. Back in Berlin was Hildebrandt member of the Academy and there entrusted with a teaching job. Therefore, he could only in 1856 Northern Europe travel to the North Cape - a journey which he - in his own words - not artistically inspired, although he also brought some with pictures from there to home.

In the years 1861-1862 Hildebrandt undertook his last concert tour, which then also came to world travel. Hildebrandt came with over 300 watercolors, drawings and oil paintings home again.
