Eduard Oscar Schmidt

( Eduard ) Oscar Schmidt ( born February 21, 1823 in Torgau, † 17 January 1886 in Kappelrodeck ) was a German zoologist.

Life and work

Schmidt was born the son of a pastor. He graduated in 1842 first in hall mathematics and science, and moved after a year to Berlin. There he came by Christian Gottfried Ehrenberg and Johannes Peter Müller to zoology. In 1847 he qualified as a professor in Jena. He taught from 1848 in Jena, 1855 in Krakow, from 1857 in Graz and from 1872 in Strasbourg. Schmidt was one of the first advocates of the Darwinian theory of evolution and turned them in his research; while he extended the application of the descent thought on the whole range of life from, from its formation to humans. As he wrote in 1873:

He was a friend of Ernst Haeckel and Franz Unger, both of which operated in Italy on the Adriatic research. Thus, he was encouraged to edit the sponges ( Porifera ) of this region. In addition he wrote several systematic and evolutionary work. Also for the popularization of science he contributed. So Schmidt wrote in 1866 the volume of the " Low Game" for Brehm's animal life.
