Eduard Petzold

Carl Eduard Adolph Petzold ( born January 14, 1815 in Königswalde (Neumark ); † August 10, 1891 in Blasewitz near Dresden ) was a German horticulturist.

Life

The son of the pastor Carl Friedrich Christian Petzold came Muskau 1826, where his father had been called as superintendent, and went to school there, then from 1828 to 1831 the Latin school in Halle an der Saale. In 1831 he became an apprentice at the nursery of the parking Creator of Prince Hermann von Pueckler in Muskau, who then won great influence on his life and work. Petzold was of the court gardener ( later Inspector Park ) Jacob Henry Rehder promoted fundamentally. In 1834 he received the letter assistants.

Petzold put 1835-1838 on the first of his creations in Matzdorf Park ( Lower Silesia). Later he developed Pücklers ideas on their own. Early appointments allowed him a remarkably extensive travels to Park trials. 1844-1852 he was the Weimar Grand Ducal court gardener in Etter Mountain and Weimar, and from 1852 to 1872, he served as " Park - Inspector " of the new lords, Prince Wilhelm Friedrich Karl of Orange- Nassau, the work on Pücklers Park Muskau after this already in 1845 the professional Muskau had to sell. 1852 Petzold - the height of his career - appointed to the Park Director of the Netherlands and remained so until 1872.

He conceived a total of 174 parks and gardens, especially in Silesia, Thuringia, the Netherlands, Saxony, West Prussia, Bohemia and Brandenburg, but also in Congress Poland, Bulgaria and Turkey, including many - mostly defunct - manor park.

A plaque at the Old Castle in Bad Muskau remembered him.
