Eduard Sobolewski

Fryderyk Edward Sobolewski ( Johann Friedrich Eduard Sobolewski, born October 1, 1808 in Königsberg, † May 17 1872 in St. Louis / Missouri) was an American composer and conductor of Polish descent.

Life

Sobolewski studied in Dresden by Carl Maria von Weber. From 1830 to 1835, he was music director of the Orchestra of the city of Königsberg, then cantor of Altstädtischer church. In 1838 he founded the Philharmonic Society and in 1843 the Musical Academy of Königsberg. From 1847 to 1854 he headed the Königsberg, then the Bremer Theater. In 1859 he emigrated to Milwaukee / Wisconsin, where he led the orchestra of the Philharmonic Society, later he went to St. Louis, where he also conducted the orchestra of the Philharmonic Society founded by him.

Sobolewski composed six operas, several oratorios, several orchestral works, cantatas and songs and worked as a music writer.
