Eduardo De Filippo

Life

De Filippo was born on May 24, 1900 in Naples. His first stage appearance was in 1904 as a Japanese child in the operetta " La Gheisha ". He began regularly the theater company of his natural father Eduardo Scarpetta to visit. From 1914 to 1921 he was a member of Vincenzo Scarpetta troops.

In 1921 he wrote his first one-act piece, "Farmacia di turno ". He was a member of the theater group Villani Peppino. Died in 1925 without having his three illegitimate children recognized as the Eduardo Scarpetta his. De Filippo married 1928, the American actress Dorothy Pennington, the marriage lasted only a few months. In the summer of 1929, he led, together with his brother Peppino and sister Titina in vaudeville style on a review of Kokasse and Tricot ( pseudonyms for Mario Mangini and Eduardo ) before the Molinaritruppe. His one-act play " Sik -Sik, l' artefice magico " led him to the first major success as a playwright.

In 1931 he founded with his brother and his sister, the " Teatro Umoristico i De Filippo " troupe. In 1932, De Filippo was also active as a film actor; since 1939 he also directed at films that often arose after their own songs. Almost all the films in common was the settlement in the milieu of poor people and targeting of sentiment and melodrama with comedic means quite well.

1972 De Filippo was awarded the Antonio Feltrinelli International Prize. In 1981 he was appointed a senator for life.

De Filippo was married three times; with Dorothy Pennington, Thea Prandi and after their death with Isabella Quarantotti.
