Eduardo Francisco Pironio

Eduardo Francisco Cardinal Pironio ( born December 3, 1920 in Nueve de Julio, Argentina, † February 5, 1998 at the Vatican ) was a Cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Eduardo Francisco Pironio grew up in a large family with the twenty-one siblings. After leaving school, he studied at the Seminary of San José, La Plata, and in Rome, the subjects Catholic theology and philosophy. On 5 December 1943 he received the sacrament of Holy Orders, and then worked for a year in the community counseling. In 1944 he became a lecturer at the Department of Mercedes, in 1959, he took over as Vicar General, the Head of Administration of the Diocese of Mercedes. Only a year later he received the appointment as rector of the Archdiocesan Seminary Villa Devoto, Buenos Aires and professor of Catholic theology at the Pontifical Catholic University of Buenos Aires. In the years 1962 to 1965, he participated as an expert at the Second Vatican Council.

1964 Pope Paul VI appointed him. Titular Bishop of Caeciri and auxiliary bishop in La Plata. He received his episcopal consecration on May 31, 1964, the Archbishop of La Plata, José Antonio Plaza.

Pironio 1967 Apostolic Administrator of the Diocese of Avellaneda. From 1967 to 1972 knew Eduardo Francisco Pironio The Secretary-General of the Latin American Bishops' Conference CELAM. In 1972 he received the appointment as Bishop of Mar del Plata, 1975, he was appointed Pro- Prefect of the Congregation for Religious and Secular Institutes in Rome. In 1976, Pope Paul VI. as cardinal deacon with the title Diakonia Santi Cosma e Damiano in the College of Cardinals, and appointed him Prefect of the Congregation for Religious and Secular Institutes, which he headed until 1984. Cardinal Pironio took part in the August conclave and on October Conclave 1978. He was there and then as papabile. Cardinal Pironio spoke out in 1982 against the imposition of Opus Dei personal prelature for. 1984 Pope John Paul II appointed him president of the Pontifical Council for the Laity, 1985 as President of the Pontifical Commission for the pastoral care of the people in health care. 1987 Pironio was raised while retaining its title Diakonia cardinal priest per hac vice and appointed Cardinal Bishop of Sabina -Poggio Mirteto 1995. In 1996 he joined with reaching the 75th birthday of his posts back in the Roman Curia.

Eduardo Francisco Pironio died on 5 February 1998 in the Vatican and was buried in the Basilica of Luján. The diocesan process of beatification is opened.
