Education in Latvia

The education system in Latvia starts with the pre-school education ( Pirmskolas izglītība ) at the age of 5 or 6 years. From the age of 7 at which compulsory education begins until the age of 16. The compulsory attendance is divided into a primary education ( Sākumskola and Pamatskola, classes 1 to 4) and a secondary teaching ( Vidusskola, grades 5 through 9) ( Apliecība par pamatizglītību ) is confirmed by a certificate of completion.

Following this training and in the presence of this final certificate in general - education schools continue ( Vispārējā vidējā izglītība, grades 10 to 12) or more professional - education schools ( profesională vidējā izglītība ) can be visited. Their completion certificates entitle to universities or institutes.

In the area of ​​compulsory education ( 6 / 7 to 16 years ), school attendance in public schools is free and is issued in Latvian. At private schools is also taught in other languages ​​.
