Edvin Vesterby

Edvin Vesterby ( born October 23, 1927 in Riguldi, Noarootsi, Estonia ) is a former Swedish wrestler Estonian origin. He was silver medalist at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne.

Career

Edvin Vesterby grew up in Stockholm, the son of products originating in Estonia parents. There he began as a teenager in 1946 with Djurgårdens IF with the rings. He was very talented and had already fought in the early 1950s in the Swedish top class of wrestlers in two styles. In 1951 he became Swedish champion in free style and Greco-Roman style in 1955 for the first time. His international career began in 1951 at the World Championships in Helsinki in free style. There he was defeated in the bantamweight after two point victories in the third round against the Iranians Mohammad Mehdi Yaghoubi and had to be content with fourth place.

He occupied the same seat at the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki. Again he entered in free style bantamweight in, winning three fights and was defeated by the Turks and the Cemil Sarıbacak all surprising Japanese Shohachi Ishii, the Olympic champion.

Also at the World Championships 1955 in Karlsruhe landed Vesterby, this time in the Greco-Roman style, on the 4th Place. After three victories, he was thrown by the eventual champion Wladimir Staschkewitsch from the Soviet Union out of the race.

The deserved medal won Vesterby then finally at the 1956 Olympic Games in Melbourne in Greco- Roman style. After three wins, although he lost against Dinko Petrov from Bulgaria and Konstantin Wyrupajew from the Soviet Union, but Petrov retired prematurely, that Vesterby behind Wyrupajew won the silver medal.

At the World Championships 1955 in Budapest Vesterby reached a good 5th place to land at the Olympic Games in Rome in 1960 in the Greco-Roman Bantamweight already once again on the 4th Place. Finally Edvin Vesterby was in 1962 in Toledo / USA again in two styles at the start and came in free style on the 6th Place and in Greco-Roman wrestling after two defeats in the first two rounds only to 14th place.

Then he ended his international Ringerlaufbehn. Edvin Vesterby, a professional electrician, stood then for many years to his hometown club as a coach in the junior area.
