Edward Battersby Bailey

Sir Edward Battersby Bailey ( born July 1, 1881 in Marsden (Kent), † March 19, 1965 ) was a British geologist.

Bailey studied at Clare College, Cambridge. He received high marks in science Tripos examinations and was heavyweight boxing champion of the university. In World War I he was in the artillery and was severely wounded, he lost an eye and his left arm was disabled. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre ( with palm trees ), as a knight of the Legion of Honour and the Military Cross. 1902 to 1929 he was with the Geological Survey. From 1929 to 1937 he was a professor at the University of Glasgow and from 1937 to 1945 director of the Geological Survey. He dealt with the geological mapping of the Scottish Highlands, particularly the area of Argyll.

In 1948, he received the Wollaston medal. In 1930 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society, the Royal Medal he received in 1943. He was an honorary member of the Geological Association. In 1946 he received an honorary doctorate ( LLD) in Glasgow. In 1945 he was knighted.
