Edward George, Baron George

Edward Alan John George, Baron George, GBE, PC, DL, known as Eddie George ( born September 11, 1938 in Carshalton, London Borough of Sutton, † April 18, 2009 in St Tudy, Cornwall ) was a British bank managers and politicians.

Life and career

Edward George was born the son of Alan and Olive George. He studied economics at the University of Cambridge. In 1962, he began working at the Bank of England, whose governor he was from 1993 to 2003.

He was a member of the school board of his former school, the Dulwich College, between 1998 and 2008 and served as chairman of the school advisory council from 2003 to 2008. In 1999 he was admitted to the Privy Council.

George was awarded the highest level of the Bath in June 2000. In June 2004 he became a life peer as Baron George of St Tudy in the County of Cornwall appointed. In the House of Lords he was sitting as Cross Bencher.

He died on 18 April 2009 at the age of 70 from lung cancer.

Family

George was married from 1962 until his death, with Vanessa Williams. They had three children, a son and two daughters.
