Edward Hargraves

Edward Hammond Hargraves ( born October 7, 1816 in Gosport, England, † October 29, 1891 in Sydney, Australia ) was an English explorer and found gold fields in Australia.

Hargraves tried unsuccessfully to make his fortune as a gold mining during the California Gold Rush. So he went to Australia, where it caused the similarity of the ground of the California gold fields with known him places in California to further investigations. This led to the discovery of gold veins on the Macquarie River ( 1851). He was then appointed by the Government to the Commissioner of crown lands and tasked with the investigation of the metal-containing parts of the country. After he had returned the report on his research, he retired into private life in 1852, received from the government offered a reward of 10,000 pounds sterling and settled down in 1864 in England. He died in October 1891 in Sydney.
