Edward L. Leahy

Edward Lawrence Leahy ( born February 9, 1886 in Bristol, Rhode Iceland, † July 22, 1953 ibid ) was an American lawyer and politician (Democratic Party), who represented the state of Rhode Iceland in the U.S. Senate.

Edward Leahy attended the public schools in Rhode Iceland and studied from 1904 to 1905, first at Brown University in Providence, before 1908, he graduated from the Law School of Georgetown University and was admitted in the same year to the bar in his home state. Then he began to practice as a lawyer in Bristol. In 1910 he became a judge at the local probate court; this position he held until 1939.

Politically Leahy was the first time between 1911 and 1913 worked as a deputy in the House of Representatives from Rhode Iceland. In 1913 he was elected to the school board of Bristol. At this time he also headed the equity portion at one chancery. During the First World War he was a member of the Judge Advocate General's Department of the U.S. Army with the rank of lieutenant.

Between 1919 and 1948, Leahy was before the financial authority of Rhode Iceland; in 1939, he served as Director of the Department of Revenue and Regulation Member of the State Government. Later, he also worked in the state sinking fund committee and the board authority of Rhode Iceland. From 1948 to 1949 he worked as a consultant by the State Treasury. Finally, on August 24, 1949 he was appointed U.S. Senator in Washington. Edward Leahy took over from the Federal Cabinet as Minister of Justice in the exchanged J. Howard McGrath and remained until December 18, 1950 in the Senate. For election to the mandate, which won John O. Pastore, previously governor of Rhode Iceland, he did not present himself. As a result, Leahy was from January 1951 until his death in July 1953 a judge at the Federal District Court of Rhode Iceland.
