Edward Langworthy

Edward Langworthy (* 1738 in Savannah, Georgia, † November 2, 1802 ) was an American teacher and delegate to the Continental Congress from Georgia. He signed the Articles of Confederation.

Career

Langworthy was a foundling, and therefore grew up in the orphanage of Bethesda, where he also went to school. Later he also taught at the same school. In the course of his life, he assisted in the creation of the Georgia Council of Safety, and was on December 11, 1775 Secretary to the Council. The Georgia General Assembly sent him in 1777 in the Continental Congress, where he worked until 1779 then. During this time he signed the Articles of Confederation. In 1785 he moved to Baltimore, Maryland. He bought a part of the newspaper, The Maryland Journal & Baltimore Advertiser and became its editor. In 1787 he sold his share and was until 1791 worked as a teacher of classical literature at the Baltimore Academy. Around 1791 he moved to Elkton, where he dealt with the writing down of Georgia's history. Langworthy 1795 returned back to Baltimore, where he was Clerk of Customs for Baltimore, a position which he held until his death. He died in 1802 of yellow fever and was buried at the Old Episcopal Church.
